LAcon IV

It was well-run. It was a lot of fun. It went by in a flash. The Hugos were of course enormously satisfying to both [info]tnh and me. The programming we were on was good. We're very grateful to the committee for moving the blogging panel--the one we shared with Kevin Drum, Cory Doctorow, Phil Plait, and MaryAnn Johanson--to a time slot where we didn't have a previous commitment.

That said, here are some notes about the not-so-great which I'd like to get down before memory fades.

(1) I'm acutely aware of the extent to which no Worldcon can possibly use every SF professional who wants to be on the program, and I'm equally aware of the way that every modern Worldcon gets slagged off by pros--usually minor pros--who think they ought to have been granted more appearances before what they fondly imagine to be their adoring public. My usual advice to such complainers is to stop being ridiculous; the World Science Fiction Convention is a service organization for science fiction fandom, not your personal publicity agency. That said, however, it's appalling to read that David Marusek was told they had no use for him on the program. Come on. Knowing about contemporary SF isn't some kind of optional "special interest." If you have nobody on your committee who has a clue who the interesting and major upcoming SF and fantasy writers are, you should be letting someone else run the Worldcon.

(2) The kaffeeklatsch setup was a disaster on stilts. They were held in a curtained-off area just a few yards away from a large stage hosting an ongoing program of music and spoken words being blasted out through a PA. There's no tactful way to say this, so I'm not going to be tactful: This was the biggest fuck-you to hearing-impaired Worldcon attendees since Glasgow in 1995. Given Teresa's hearing loss, there was no question of us actually conducting a kaffeeklatsch in this environment; instead, we led our people out of the Arena lobby, up the escalator to the second floor, and into the Green Room, which was happy to offer us a large round table and the use of their coffee service. This solved our problem, but it did nothing to solve the greater problem, which is Worldcon organizers who are insensitive fuckheads about the very large number of people in any human population, not just fandom, who don't have the hyper-acute hearing of a 21-year-old. I want to know who was responsible for putting a program item devoted to low-key round-table conversation next to a gigantic PA system, and once I know, I want their personal and public apology. I want to see some pain, some embarrassment, and some institutional memory among future Worldcon organizers. This is going to stop.

(3) Harlan Ellison groping Connie Willis on stage at the Hugos wasn't funny and it wasn't okay. I understand (from third parties; I haven't spoken to her about it) that Connie Willis's position is that Ellison has done worse and she can handle him, but I really didn't want to watch it and neither, I think, did a lot of other people in the audience. Up to then the comedic schtick aspects of the Hugo presentation had been genuinely funny. After that, I think, many of us just wanted it all to stop.

Just as with George W. Bush's now-famous uninvited shoulder-rub of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the basic message of Ellison's tit-grab is this: "Remember, you may think you have standing, status, and normal, everyday adult dignity, but we can take it back at any time. If you are female, you'll never be safe. You can be the political leader of the most powerful country in Europe. You can be the most honored female writer in modern science fiction. We can still demean you, if we feel like it, and at random intervals, just to keep you in line, we will."

It's not okay. It's not funny. It wasn't a blow against bourgeois pieties or political correctness. It was just pathetic and nasty and sad and most of us didn't want to watch it. It's another thing that's going to stop.

Every time I hear about HE's behaviour I am reminded of Sandra Bullock demonstrating self-defense as her "talent" in _Miss Congeniality_.

Does David Marusek have an LJ feed to his blog?

I had not heard about Harlan groping Connie yet. Man, that pisses me off. I agree with you entirely about the message, and that's just not right.

I also appreciate what you said about the lack of concern for hearing impaired attendees. I am hearing impaired myself, and that would have really messed me up as well. It's very disappointing to hear that they haven't improved that. The hearing disabled in particular always seem to be forgotten.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw him do that. It was tawdry and creepy; the Bush-Merkel analogy is exactly right.

All good points. How can we stop these things?

(2) The kaffeeklatsch setup was a disaster on stilts.

[info]truepenny's kaffeeklatsch happened to be scheduled at the same time as that wedding ceremony, or re-affirmation of vows, or whatever it was, that featured not one but two pipers playing their bagpipes, as well as full-throated (very masculine sounding, from the earpoint of those of us seated in the kaffeeklatsch area) renditions of three cheers "Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!!! All discussion had, perforce, to halt until these several high-decibel eruptions had subsided.

The Kaffeeklatsch Door-wards came over and apologized to [info]truepenny several times, but said it was out of their hands -- something to do with a guy very highly placed on the Concom -- but I took this to mean the piping pipers etc, not the basic idiotic space assignment for the klatsches in general.

Would it help, do you think, for klatsch attendees to write complaints to the concom? or what would be most effective?

Interesting comments, and I'll bear them in mind. For my sins I'm running a convention in Dublin next year. While not being anywhere near the scale of LACon, the lessons are still very valid.
1) certainly any invited guess will have a place on the program
2) that was not just insensitive to hearing impaired, it was very bad planning (at the very least)
3) all I can say on this is there is one writer who won't be invited

I've been to one SF convention (actually, two half conventions for a total of one) and have never attended a kaffeeklatsch, but the notion of one always seemed attractive to me inasmuch as attending one would be about (it seemed to me) drinking coffee and engaging in conversation, two of my favorite activities. Even setting aside the indifference to the hearing impaired apparent in the situation you describe, it's appalling that they would put all these small conversational gatherings in a huge room with PA system activities going on at the same time.

I guess if you have organizers who don't grasp the simple prerequisites of pleasant conversation, it's fairly (and sadly) predictable they also won't care much about the difficulties faced by the hearing impaired.

That all sounds very unfortunate, particularly Harlan Ellison's antics. Hopefully he'll have enough sense to apologise to Connie Willis, and the world in general.

Ellison did what...?

Just goes to show, even brilliant authors can be MCP idiots.

can't help but wonder what the reaction would have been had Connie turned around and kneed him in the nuts?

Oh, dear, Harlan Ellison is being true to his fiery contrarian honesty despite the hatred and stupidity of the lowly politically-correct fans, who are no doubt desperately jealous of his fierce independence and his genius.

Again.

Yawn.

Except that it's completely uncool to use other people as props in your self-invention, but it's hardly the first time, is it.

What a sad, cowardly little man. It's a shame.

Ellison did what?

I hadn't heard about that. Then again, I barely communicated with the outside world this weekend...My god. How incredibly out of line. And "he's done worse" certainly doesn't make it okay. It makes it more so.

he groped connie willis? did anyone in the audience react vocally?

in other news, congratulations and have a safe trip home.

[info]jeffreyab: David Marusek

Did David mention when he put his name in to be on events?

Or how he did it?

I think potential panelists have to market themselves to con organizers, saying things about their background, what kind of programming they have done in the past and who they done it with and for.

There are exceptions to this rule who are SF household names but even they have to remember they maybe dealing with someone who organizes well but has limited knowledge of the field.

Harlan Ellison groping Connie Willis on stage at the Hugos wasn't funny and it wasn't okay.

Can you provide a little more detail on what precisely happened? Because the way you worded it leaves a lot to the imagination. Stories will spread, and I'd hate to see things wrongly minimized or blown out of proportion.

Heck, until I got to "Ellison's tit-grab" I assumed he pinched her ass or something.

re point 2: I only got panels through Lou Anders' direct intervention, despite having asked three times and (ahem) I was up for one of them shiny rocket things.

The Kaffeeklatches could have been held in Arena Meeting Room 1/2. It is an enclosed room next to the lounge, very close to where the Kaffeeklatches were held. It would not have required any organizational or contract changes to locate the Kaffeeklatches the meeting room. The daytime programming scheduled for the room would have to be moved elsewhere, which would be a minor hassle, but doable. On Saturday night the meeting room was the staging area for the Hugo Awards participants. It was setup with rounds. The Kaffeeklatches could have used the same setup.

I wish I'd been alert enough at the Hugo ceremony to boo Harlan when he groped Connie. Harlan wants attention, but he deserved to get it in the forms of boos, catcalls, and shouts of "get your hands off of her". He really needed a good dose of public disapproval. He fucked up. It wasn't cute.

Thank you for saying this so explicitly. Sometimes spelling it out for people is really the right and necessary thing, and this is one of those times.
